Confederate General Harry Heth was under orders to forage for shoes in the little Pensylvania town. He was not to attack under any circumstances. But unfortunately for him and his troops. He runs into General John Buford's dismounted cavalry. Heavy fighting goes on between the two and Buford's forces are exhausted. General John Reynolds brings a full Corps to reinforce Buford just in the nic of time. Gen. Reynolds gets killed near McPherson Wood after saying, "Forward, for God sake forward!"
Upon realizing that the battle has started between the two, Lee orders a full scale attack against General Longstreet's advice even though the South seems to have a numerical & tactical advantage.

The Union lines fall back across Seminary ridge and through Gettysburg. They end up regrouping on Cemetary Hill between Seminary Ridge and Cemetary Ridge.

Lee's Reasoning to invade the North:

  1. He needs Grant to loosen his grip on Vickburg.
  2. He wants to hurt the Union's will to fight.
  3. Virginia has been too destroyed and the land no longer provides food to support his army.

Lee's Fears:

  1. There might be spies among his ranks.
  2. He is also uninformed of the whereabouts of his "eyes" (Jeb Stuart).

This is the end of day 1.
